New Year, New Approach to Thinking About Your health

January 4, 2020 By Andi Freedman

Welcome to 2020! As we usher in another year, we are reminded that the month of January tends to bring with it the age-old idea of making resolutions for the new year. The good news is that resolutions don’t work. That’s right, it’s GOOD NEWS – so you don’t need to stress out about making one and sticking to it! A resolution is simply an unrealistic goal you set for yourself. These types of goals are not achievable as they tend to be too broad of a goal. What you can do as you ring in the new year, is to come up with a new approach with a new way of thinking so you can face the new year by breaking your old thinking patterns.

Consider exercise. Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Especially this time of year, many gyms will see a bump in membership as droves of people sign up as part of their “New Year resolutions”. These same establishments may also see a dip where they originally saw the spike due to many failed resolutions. Whether they realize it or not many of these folks who stopped going to the gym talked themselves out of going. Your thoughts are the first thing to happen in any situation and it is your thoughts that elicit a feeling, which then elicits a behavior. What you need to do to stay committed to your goal is to ask yourself why you are sabotaging your exercise goals? This is one of the first steps you need to take for a healthier path forward.

Once you have identified what your thoughts are and how you are justifying not going to the gym, it will lead to choices that are more in line with your goals. It is always the thoughts that counts first and don’t be afraid to challenge them. If you do not change your thinking, it can become impossible to reach your goals. So, this January, think “out with the old and in with the new” – new thoughts for a happier and healthier 2020.
